Groovetech EP 16 – What’s The Shelf Life of a Digital Library?

I had an interesting month in August. I visited Cyprus for a couple of weeks for a wedding among other social obligations. I went through my collection of old CDs – music, and software (games to be specific). I tried to install the original Fifa International Football Game on my computer – in part to satisfy my inner teenagers yearn to waste some time. But I quickly realized what a process it can be to install a game designed for computers in the 90s on a modern laptop. It just won’t work. That got me thinking. What is the shelf life of a digital library?

I realize the on-demand nature of the current music consumer favours digital formats over analog ones but in a sea of Spotify playlists or the instant-gratification a music download but I find these formats to treat music almost as a one and done product. When you own the vinyl, you will replay the same tunes more often – revisiting them in a different context while also noticing the tracks subtleties. Which I find to be absent in many digital-only releases. I just can’t see a future where one’s music collection is only digital. It sort of misses the point of having a collection.

Be a Guest on the Show

If you play underground music, I want to hear from you. Send me a message including a link to your mixcloud or soundcloud and thoughts about your music convictions and if things work out I would be privileged to have you on the show in the future. Consider this: it’s all about the heart and soul so what I want to hear is a mix that you really feel and like, not just something to get more fans or gigs. It’s not about you – its about the music.
